Earlier this year, The Bridge profiled the tremendous efforts of PORCH in Orange County, the key role Weaver Street Market plays in PORCH’s success, and WSM’s overall approach to hunger relief in Orange County. Working in partnership with a network of non-profits and volunteer-driven organizations such as PORCH, their shared goal in these efforts is to eventually end hunger in Orange County.
In keeping with this goal, Weaver Street is engaging its membership during the holiday season in an effort to fund hunger relief efforts. There are three ways in which shoppers can support hunger relief, including the co-op’s first Round Up! food campaign.
Round Up! is exactly what you’re thinking. Shoppers at WSM have the opportunity to round up their total food bill to the next dollar at the checkout line, with the campaign proceeds pooled to purchase fresh winter produce for the local food banks. WSM notes that a food co-op in Minneapolis has raised more than $1-million in four years doing a similar campaign, so this effort could pay handsome dividends between now and January 3.
Weaver Street is also providing shoppers with an opportunity to support hunger relief efforts through its annual Hope for the Holidays campaign. Purchases of specific items will automatically trigger a donation to WSM’s Cooperative Community Fund in order to support local hunger relief agencies.
WSM is also supporting PORCH through a fun and creative initiative. The co-op is making copies of the book Planting Hope available for sale. Written and illustrated by kids and intended for kids, Planting Hope may be purchased at WSM for $20, with all proceeds benefiting PORCH.
Weaver Street & its membership have shown leadership and commitment to alleviating hunger in Orange County. With the holiday season unfolding, it’s great to see the co-op offering members a variety of ways to further leverage this commitment.
